Northcliff Clinic, situated conveniently off Beyers Naudé Drive, has announced the launch of a new community health initiative offering free diabetes screenings for residents aged 60 and above. The programme, which commenced on Monday, 15 April, is designed to address the growing prevalence of type 2 diabetes within the suburb's established, family-oriented demographic, where a significant number of older residents reside.
The initiative provides comprehensive screenings, including blood glucose tests, BMI assessments, and educational consultations on lifestyle modifications. Clinic staff will also be on hand to offer advice on healthy eating and the importance of regular physical activity, leveraging Northcliff's active community associations and walking trails. Early detection is a cornerstone of effective diabetes management, helping to prevent more severe health complications that can arise if the condition goes undiagnosed.
Dr. Eleanor Botha, a general practitioner at Northcliff Clinic, highlighted the importance of this targeted approach. "We've observed a clear need within our community for more accessible preventative health services, particularly for our senior citizens," said Dr. Botha. "Many residents, despite living active lives on the Ridge, might not prioritise regular check-ups. This programme aims to remove financial and access barriers, encouraging proactive health management and improving overall quality of life for our older neighbours."
The free screenings will be available every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM throughout April and May. Residents are encouraged to book an appointment in advance to ensure efficient service. The clinic hopes this programme will not only detect new cases but also raise general awareness about diabetes prevention and care within the wider Northcliff community.
