Northcliff residents aged 55 and older are encouraged to take advantage of a new, free diabetes screening program launched by the Northcliff Clinic. Situated conveniently on Beyers Naudé Drive, the initiative aims to address the increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes within the community, offering early detection and preventative guidance.
The program, which commenced on May 15th, provides quick and confidential blood sugar tests, along with educational materials on healthy living, diet, and exercise. Nurses and health educators are on hand to discuss results and refer individuals to further medical consultations if necessary. The clinic has designated Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 AM to 1 PM for these screenings, with no appointment required.
Dr. Elara van der Merwe, a general practitioner at the Northcliff Clinic, emphasized the importance of early detection for managing the condition effectively. "Our community, with its established family homes and active senior population, benefits greatly from accessible health services," Dr. Van der Merwe stated. "Many residents may not realise they are at risk, and this program provides a vital, no-cost opportunity for them to monitor their health. We've seen a significant turnout already, indicating a real need within Northcliff."
This community-focused health drive aligns with efforts by local associations to support the well-being of Northcliff's diverse demographic. Organizers hope the screenings will empower residents to make informed health choices and reduce the long-term impact of diabetes in the suburb.
