Northcliff residents aged 50 and above now have access to free diabetes screening and educational resources, following the launch of a new community health initiative by the Northcliff Community Clinic. The program, which commenced this week, seeks to proactively identify individuals at risk of Type 2 diabetes and provide essential information on prevention and management.
Situated conveniently off Beyers Naudé Drive, the clinic will host screening sessions every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM throughout May. Participants will receive a quick blood glucose test, a brief consultation with a registered nurse, and informational pamphlets detailing healthy eating habits, the importance of regular physical activity – including leveraging local amenities like the Northcliff Ridge trails – and early warning signs of diabetes. The initiative comes as local health data indicates a rising prevalence of diabetes among the older demographic in established Johannesburg suburbs.
Dr. Eleanor Van Der Merwe, lead physician at the Northcliff Community Clinic, emphasized the importance of early detection. "Many residents, particularly those who have lived here for decades, may not regularly visit a doctor for preventative checks. This program is designed to be accessible and non-intrusive, offering a vital first step towards better health management," she stated. "We want to empower our community members to take control of their health, especially considering the family-oriented nature of Northcliff and the desire for residents to remain active within it."
The program is supported by the Northcliff Residents' Association and local businesses, which have contributed to the provision of educational materials. Residents are encouraged to book their slots in advance to ensure efficient service, although walk-ins will be accommodated where possible. This proactive health measure aims to foster a healthier, more informed Northcliff community.
